Two years prior to becoming a Christian I spent as much time as I could reading about human nature. I found it to be a fascinating experience and I absorbed as many books as I could get my hands on about the subject, both from the library and from second-hand book shops. Old cloth-bound and hard cover books held a greater appeal for me than the newer, one of the reasons being my Continue reading “Zombies in the Pulpits – Zombies in the Pews”
The Church has a Few Lackeys
For some time I’ve been getting some mental pictures on the church and recently I saw a few people gathering together for Sunday worship services, Bible studies and mid-week home group meetings. And sadly, within these pictures there was a great lack of true joy, peace and liberty within the people. The leader talks about these and is doing his best to project such from within but the reality is it’s forced … it’s not real. At the same time the people sense Continue reading “The Church has a Few Lackeys”
The Same Old Same Old
A few weeks ago I stumbled across a message on Facebook, “Trying to do the Lord’s work in your own strength is the most confusing, exhausting and tedious of all work.” Corrie ten Boom. I got to thinking about all the different ways I’ve heard the first part of that message expressed by Christian people over the years. ‘This is the Lord’s work, it’s not mine’ – ‘it’s not our strength, amen?’ – ‘we’re simply the Lord’s vessels making ourselves available to Him’ – ‘this work belongs to God so we leave the results with Him’ – ‘we do the possible and God will do the impossible’ – ‘it’s not for us to question results, God will act in His time, not ours.’ Sounds Continue reading “The Same Old Same Old”
The Earth is Not going Anywhere
On Sunday June 5, an estimated 10,000 people here in Melbourne rallied as part of a national climate change campaign urging the federal government to set a carbon price. And one of the newspapers carrying the story showed a picture of a young boy about twelve years old holding a green placard. Written on the placard were the words, “The Earth Is In Our Hands!” Looking into that picture I thought how sad it is that a boy so young should be burdened by such a lie. I’m told that many young people are so fearful of Continue reading “The Earth is Not going Anywhere”
The “I believe/we believe” Man
Whilst out walking the other day I was doing some intercessory prayer for the church and not long into it, I received a mental picture of people gathered together in their respective groups or denominations all over the nation. I saw faces both young and old all sitting passively, giving their best attention to the man or woman up the front delivering his or her 40-minute, 4-point, PowerPoint sermon. Very few open Bibles were in the hands of people … there seemingly being no need for them because the Scriptures being used to support the sermon were all on the PowerPoint presentation. And in each Continue reading “The “I believe/we believe” Man”
Praying for The Dead is A Lie
A day or so after the assassination of terrorist bin Laden, a Roman Catholic priest here in Melbourne made headlines by challenging his people to forgive him and pray for him. According to the newspaper the priest said bin Laden was a man who needs all the prayers he can get as he goes before God. “It’s hard to think of anyone who needs it more,” he said. Again, “But considering what he has been responsible for, this is a man in need of prayer.” I suspect as long as this priest is around that church there’s going to be a Continue reading “Praying for The Dead is A Lie”
Nothing More than a Religious Figurehead
For the past couple of weeks I’ve been getting mental pictures of people in church attendance on a Sunday morning. During praise and worship there’s more than the odd one giving the impression they’d rather be somewhere else. A few others are going through the motions – lips moving, but it’s doubtful that the same is applying to their hearts. During sermon time it’s pretty much the same deal. Some have their Bible open as they listen to the preacher but some do not because Continue reading “Nothing More than a Religious Figurehead”
What an Astounding Reality!
For the purpose of participating in a Real Time Evangelism – Scripture Blog Tag Event I was recently invited by my fellow blogger and sister in Christ, Lynn Baber at www.lynnbaber.com to share my three favorite Scripture verses. And just as Lynn expresses in her post, “the biggest problem was narrowing my Scriptures down to only three ….” that’s my biggest problem too! Where does one start, when there are 31,175 (KJV) Verses to choose from? Of course, not all of them are my favorites!! … but thousands of them are simply because they are the word of Almighty God. What an astounding reality! In 26 years I’ve never gotten used to it.
Religious Nut-cases & Idiots
As they do every Easter, the TV channels once again this year gave news snippets from around the world of people celebrating this event. And as always, the news footage was limited to celebrations taking place in the English (Anglican/Episcopalian), Romanist and Orthodox cathedrals, with news readers using such language as, “Christians around the world” and, “The Church.” We saw the cameras zoom in on clergymen decked out in albs, amices, chasubles, stoles, birettas, mitres, large silver and gold crosses … lots Continue reading “Religious Nut-cases & Idiots”
Dumb & Ignorant Statements
In the United States a young boy had a near-death experience and testifies of having visited heaven. He says he met the Lord Jesus there. His testimony landed him a book deal, it’s now published and has become a best-seller. In her introduction to the interview with him and his parents, the television presenter said, “Have you ever wondered if heaven is for real? After a brush with death, a young boy may have the answers millions of us are looking for.” A migrant lady from Thailand phoned a popular radio announcer here in Australia. She talked of a cultural Continue reading “Dumb & Ignorant Statements”
