A Scoffer is a Mocker and a Mocker is a Scoffer

“Prove to me the existence of God,” says the mocking scoffer. “Prove to me the Bible is the Word of God,” says the scoffing mocker. My response: “You are the proof!” Will such a response give witness to them that this is so. No, most probably not. But for any new Christian reading this post, it will give witness to you that this is so. The apostle Peter tells us scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts 2 Peter 3:3. Jesus’ half-brother, Jude, tells us to remember the words spoken before by the apostles…….that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts Jude 1:17-18. Make the Bible your Final Authority.

A scoffer is a mocker and a mocker is a scoffer – same difference, as the saying goes. According to Scripture they have one thing in common – not their reasoning ability, not their intelligence, cleverness or sophistication; not their argumentative skills. It is that they live or walk according to their own lusts, desires or longing – especially for what is forbidden. Can we remember that reality when next we are faced with them? They are rebels – defiant as young children – except that there’s hope for young children! With the Holy Spirit’s guidance, when you look into the eyes of scoffers and mockers you will see them as angry, bitter people. It matters not if they smile or laugh when scoffing and mocking, anger and bitterness is what drives them.

Check them out on the Internet before you talk face to face with like-minded scoffers and mockers. Study their eyes and faces; watch their hand and body movements; listen to their words; note their emotive expressions. Much can be learned about such people if you take the time to do this. And don’t receive the devil’s condemnation when he tells you you’re being judgmental. You’re not being judgmental; you are studying in detail  the strategies of the very devil himself. Why people are scoffers and mockers is not the issue; the fact that they are, is the issue. Just like the physical soldier, the spiritual soldier’s motto too must be, “Know your enemy.” Satan says don’t be judgmental, Jesus says, judge with righteous judgment John 7:24.

A proud and haughty man – “Scoffer” is his name; he acts with arrogant pride Proverbs 21:24. Again, if you study the Internet scoffers and mockers, the Holy Spirit will draw your attention to those characteristics: pride, haughtiness and arrogance. You’ll learn lots about Satan while you’re at it; these are his characteristics. Scoffers and mockers are his children. Interesting too, whilst they willingly deny the existence of God and the divine authority of the Bible, there are many scoffers and mockers out there willingly embracing the reality of Satan. One scoffer and mocker tells us he hopes there is a hell. He’d rather spend an eternity there than any eternity with “stupid Christians.” That’s one angry man, indeed! He’s old, but the rebellious child within is very evident.

Sadly, the most effective and influential scoffers and mockers seem to be those with church backgrounds of some kind. As for vitriol, none can express it better than those formerly of the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of England. When listening to someone expressing something like, “Your faith is a joke; your god is a joke. He’s so absurd he’s an embarrassment even to people who don’t believe in him,” and when he speaks of God as, “the fictional psychopath of the desert,” it can almost be guaranteed that’s the vitriol of a person formerly associated with the Romanist denomination. An abuse or hurt of some kind has been experienced by that person or someone close to him or her. Without doubt, God will get the blame for that.

Scoffers and mockers whose background it is from those two denominations blame or deny the existence of God not just because of the sexually perverted cardinals, bishops and priests among them, but also for their pretentious piety, hypocrisy, amassing of wealth, land and buildings and, in the case of the Romanist denomination, the tyrannical, dictatorial rule of the leadership. It is clearly evident that scoffers and mockers from the latter, whilst having left their church, their church has not left them. Only God has the power to release that from them, but since they deny His existence there’s nothing God can do for them. But, no mind is a free thinker; if one rejects the mind of God, one embraces the mind of Satan whether they know it or not, or believe it or not.

Church background or not, scoffers and mockers are emotionally insecure people. That’s why ridicule is the number one tactic used to try and make Christians look silly for what we believe. Take the “art” of ridicule from scoffers and mockers and what have they got left to say? Nothing. Ridicule is an extremely effective weapon; because they dread the thought of being made fools, it silences most people immediately. This alone accounts for the success of the “man-made” climate change and same-sex marriage crowd. Without ridicule as the main weapon, their influence upon the world wouldn’t be what it is today. To argue one’s case from a logical viewpoint is always more difficult. But if you lack the art of logic, then all you’re left with is the “art” of ridicule.

British theologian and biblical scholar of yesteryear, Adam Clarke, spoke of scoffers and mockers similarly: “Persons who shall endeavor to turn all religion into ridicule, as this is the most likely way to depreciate truth in the sight of the giddy multitude. The scoffers, having no solid argument to produce against revelation, endeavor to make a scaramouch of some parts; and then affect to laugh at it, and get superficial thinkers to laugh with them.” There we go, that’s additional proof of their emotional insecurity. They can’t simply rest alone with their foolish notions; they are compelled to seek out other emotionally insecure people – like-minded “superficial thinkers” from “the giddy multitude” to prop them up!

The Bible references the last days and the last time as those beginning a few days after Jesus ascended to heaven Acts 2:14-17. In fact the early church lived in expectation of Jesus’ return not long after He left them. So scoffers and mockers of Christians, for whatever our beliefs, is not a new thing. Satan has no idea when Jesus will return any more than we do and that’s one grand reason why he’s had these people on hand in every generation since that time. He dreads the thought of getting caught on the hop. That’s why he’s so active on the Internet. He can reach more people with 5-minute You Tube scoffing and mocking than he ever could by the use of any other methods of communication. But he’ll still be caught on the hop!

Just as the resurrection of Jesus threw Satan into a spin of ultimate proportions, so too will he be when the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and the trumpet of God. So too will he be when he sees the dead in Christ rise first. What shock awaits him to witness we who are alive getting caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17. Satan knows that day is on the horizon. It means he then has a few short years left to work the greatest havoc the earth will ever experience. Important note: Satan will be a tool in the hands of God during that time as will be all non-repentant scoffers and mockers. They don’t believe that, but it’s imperative that Christians believe it.

Now, if it’s true that Satan will be thrown into a spin of ultimate proportions when Jesus returns to remove the church before God pours out his wrath on the world in judgment, how about his scoffers and mockers?! “They won’t know what stuck them,” some might say. They’ll know it alright. Proof of God’s existence will no longer be argued for and neither will proof that the Bible is the Word of God. Yes, they will continue to scoff and mock God and the Bible, but their horrific experiences of suffering under the 7 seals, 7 trumpets and 7 bowls judgments will profoundly witness to them that God is God, the Bible is the Bible and fools are fools. The fool says in his heart, “There is no God….. Psalm 14:1 Fool is what they’ll say of themselves throughout hell’s eternity.

Scoffers and mockers accuse Christians of delighting in the fact that hell awaits all who scoff and mock. Some do, most do not! Those who profoundly experience on a daily basis the goodness, mercy, love and grace of God, will not. Hell awaited us too until we met Jesus. It was He who proved to us the existence of God and that the Bible is the Word of God. It was He who released us from our scoffing and mocking. It was He who released us from our lusts. It was He who released us from our anger and bitterness. It was He who released us from our emotional insecurity. It was He who released us from the “art” of ridicule. A scoffer is a mocker and a mocker is a scoffer. The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I  have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly John 10:0.

  1. Rodger,

I appreciated your discussion. Mockers mock. Scoffers scoff. Mockers scoff. And scoffers mock. Mocking God and God’s way is in their nature. Especially manifested by the Jewish religious leaders at the crucified Christ and the Roman soldiers at the trial of Christ. Scoffing began at the garden with “you surely shall not die”. And will not end until when they see “The Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power and coming on the clouds of heaven”.

I also liked your discussion about “judging with righteous judgement”

    1. Hello Jeff

Thank you for reading and commenting.

You are right indeed! No end until the Lord comes, but then what a shock to learn it’s too late for them all. Much and many to pray for in the meantime.

Re judging … too many Christians have bowed to the devil’s accusation here instead of the Lord’s truth about this. Our authority is given to shut his mouth, not the other way round.

      God bless you, Jeff
