The faithfulness of God has never ceased to amaze me each time I affirm or promise Him that I am fully prepared and willing to do His bidding on a daily basis. For example: if I decide to go for a walk or do some shopping and at the same time say something like, “Lord, by Your grace, I’m prayed up, I’m worded up, I’m (Spirit) filled up and I’m ready to be used in any way You see fit while I’m out there,” then very often He will give me someone to say something to. I can expect this without having to engineer or manufacture anything.
One day I was walking along the footpath and from quite a distance away I could hear a woman screaming at crying children. It wasn’t the normal yelling that might be expected from a young mother towards a misbehaving child, she appeared to be under some great unnatural stress. I heard fear in that screaming. As I got closer, sure enough, I saw a young woman in her twenties outside the front door with three children around the ages of three or four. So I smiled and waved at her from the path and then decided to walk up her driveway and chat.
Knowing this appointment was made by God, that’s exactly what I told her, sharing also, that the Lord wanted her to release all her fear upon Him. “Tell Him the very worst of what you’re experiencing,” I said. She looked at me speechless, but she nodded and continued to do so as I spoke about Jesus having the exact solution to whatever it was that was troubling her. Peace replaced fear, both in her eyes and in her heart. She became softly spoken as did the children around her. I was no longer representing any church by that time but it made/makes no difference to God when one is truly representing Him. God visited her that day and she knew it.
On a train one time during off-peak hours, I noticed there were only about three other people in the whole carriage. I was on my way to visit a fellow Christian and I was reading my Bible on that thirty-minute journey. The train stopped at a station and a young Pacific Island lady came into our carriage and sat down a few seats ahead of me on the opposite side. Some distance into the journey she got up and came and sat down right beside me. Next thing I hear her sniffling and about to weep. So I asked her what the matter was and she told me that she had received news the night before from Samoa, that her thirty-one year old brother had died.
The young lady had been a church-goer in her home country but said she had never experienced anything of God in her times of attending. I then asked her to seriously consider that God’s presence was with her, “here right now,” and that it was He Who caused her to come from her seat to sit next to me. Not only that, but because I had a Bible with me, God was going to reveal Himself to her with a promise of peace and comfort for her and her loved ones. She readily saw the truth of what I was saying and she listened with intent. God touched that lady in a glorious way that day as I prayed for her.
On my home journey that same day, I noticed a business-like lady in her early thirties sitting opposite me, reading a New Age book on the occult. Since I had plenty of time, I decided to write out some Scriptures on a piece of paper regarding God’s viewpoint on the occult; ie, Leviticus 19:31; 20:6, 27; Deuteronomy 18:9-13; Isaiah 8:18-20, plus a few Scriptures on Jesus Christ and His purpose of coming to earth. The train was crowded by the time I finished but in spite of that I decided it a good idea to strike up a conversation.
I mentioned to her that she was seeking truth, and to say that she was startled at my approach, was an understatement. But she agreed. She informed me that she was an avid reader of tarot cards, a practitioner of Eastern meditation and yoga and had been to a spiritualist church a number of times. I then mentioned that I had written out some Scriptures for her to take home and check out from the Bible, saying also, that if she was serious about seeking truth, then God too would get serious and reveal Himself to her through the Lord Jesus Christ. The lady genuinely thanked me and shook my hand as we parted.
I was once asked to pray through the apartment of a dying man and his wife. Due to his illness the couple had decided to downsize their home and get settled into their new place before his passing, so that his wife be spared the trouble later. Like me, this couple were believers in Christ, but also believers in demonic presence in society. The idea behind the praying was to cleanse the apartment from any evil that may have been invited in from the previous owners and to dedicate the home to the ownership and on-going presence of the Holy Spirit of God. During our prayer, the couple both remarked of the strong presence of Christ in our midst.
A few months later I revisited the couple one mid-morning. By now the man was mostly bed-ridden but as we were sharing the Lord’s truths together he told me that Jesus’ peace and presence was written all over my eyes and face. He was not the first sick and dying person to tell me of such a manifestation, but in my experience, that manifestation is for the benefit of those such as himself, more-so than myself. It is a personal, practical witness to them of the reality, presence and eternal hope they have in Christ and His promise never to leave them nor forsake them.
Nevertheless, it was a blessing that God wanted me to embrace as well, having recently gone through some severe trials. It was a time when I felt God’s rock-solid peace and assurance in a powerful way. Two days later in the evening, a friend called in to tell me that the man went to be with the Lord that mid-morning. God is very gracious. It is an honor to be used of Him for the ministry of others – especially those whom He knows are about to enter His eternal presence. “And I heard the voice of the Lord saying: Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us? Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.” Isaiah 6:8.
There’s an old hymn that begins with,
“I love to tell the story, of how Jesus came from glory”
