Mockers Attacking the Bible

For an experiment, some young people in Europe purchased a Bible, disguised it with a dust jacket from the Koran. Next they highlighted verses from both Testaments that contrast with current Western norms and values. They read those verses to both young and old people at random on the street and asked for their opinion. The people were shocked, but even more so when told the verses came not from the Koran, but from the Bible. Interesting that they should do that with the Bible and not the other way round. I wonder how long they would live if they placed a Bible dust jacket over a Koran and did the same thing on the street!

They know they have nothing to fear from Christians; what they don’t know is, they have plenty to fear from God when they stand before Him to give an account for that act. So do the people who partook of the experiment. Do not be deceived, God is not mocked….. (disrespect, dishonor, ridicule) Galatians 6:7. God will mock them though. Surely He scorns (mocks) the scornful (mocker)….. Proverbs 3:34. All who mock the Bible mock God. Too, they mock His Son Jesus. There’s a price to pay for that. A couple of weeks ago here, there was a road rage incident and a man was killed. A photo of the dead man showed him (on an earlier occasion) holding a can of beer and pointing to words printed on his T-shirt, “Jesus died for my tins.”

Everywhere one looks today mockery of God is commonplace. We know the God of the Bible and the Bible of God are the one true because these are the only ones mocked. They wouldn’t dare do that to Muslims and they couldn’t care doing it to any of the others. Although it’s disheartening to hear and observe, we better get used to it as Bible Christians because it’s going to intensify at rapid rates. Satan doesn’t know the exact timing of Christ’s return but he knows it’s not far off. How would he know that? He knows the Bible better than us which means he also knows Bible prophecy is falling into place over there in the Middle East and that most people, including many Christians, are not awake to that reality.

At the end of the 7-year Tribulation, Jesus returns to set up His earthly Kingdom. Satan is going to be bound and put out of action for a thousand years Revelation 20:2. He knows that, so in the meantime his mission is to recruit a band of mockers so large and influential that even people who once called themselves Christians will become part of them. I don’t say this based on mere opinion; I have spoken with such people. They once rebelled against the Bible, then they denied it, now they mock it. That’s the pattern. Satan loves these so-called once-upon-a-time Christians for they can put up a better argument than those who are clueless as to why they mock the Bible.

Although Jude was specifically referring to both old and new, depraved and doomed apostates, he also had mockers in mind when he exhorted the church to, contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints Jude 1:3, 18. The purpose of this post is to encourage those among us who are new to the faith at any age and Christians of young age. Don’t be intimidated by this crowd. Every time you hear and observe mockers attacking the Bible, know in your heart of hearts that firstly, they are shallow people. People of substance don’t mock, they have no need to. They may not agree with you and may even argue their case as to why they disagree, but they don’t mock.

Secondly, mockers attacking the Bible are not wise, they are fools. God says they are, not me, but I most certainly agree with Him! The fear of the LORD  is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction Proverbs 1:7. The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, but the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness Proverbs 15:2. A wall of certificated qualifications in a Bible mocker’s office for example, is no indication that such a person is wise. Some of the most messed up people in all the world have those things on display, but personally they are a disaster and they know it. Some of them will even blame God for it! How wise is that? Know too that politically correct Bible mockers are the most shallow and unwise of all people.

Thirdly, mockers attacking the Bible are liars. If you ask them, “How do you deal with your guilt?” some will say they don’t have any. Yes they do! Others will say they dismiss it from their minds when it comes up. No they don’t. There is no peace, says the LORD, for the wicked Isaiah 48:22; 57:21. Hold on to those Scriptures; one doesn’t have to be a Bible mocker for this truth to kick in, only an unredeemed sinner. But if one is a mocker, then know for sure they toss and turn! But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt Isaiah 57:20. These people are not without a conscience and it torments them for sure when they are left alone with their thoughts.

So, new Christian and young Christian, if that’s all you ever learn about the nature and character of mockers attacking the Bible that will be sufficient for you – shallow, fools and liars. No matter who they might be who come at you, no matter the force of their argument, no matter what they consider themselves to be, that’s what they are in God’s eyes so make them that in your eyes. Avoid the temptation to disagree with God’s view of such people. You are not being judgmental, they are; they are judging God! You have the Holy Spirit and the Bible as your witness to that reality, they have no witness. Regardless of positions these people may hold in the workplace, school, university or wherever, don’t be afraid of them, God is with you Deuteronomy 31:6.

Another thing handy to know about mockers attacking the Bible; they are bullies and cowards. They know they still get to live when they mock the Bible. On the other hand, they know they get to die if they mock the Koran. That’s why they have no qualms in immediately labeling all Christians right-wing terrorists when some religious nut case with a once-upon-a-time church background goes on a shooting rampage. Not so with the Islamist terrorist however; so afraid are they of offending all Muslims they won’t even express those two words! Where does such fear in these bullies and cowards come from? It comes from God Almighty Himself. There they are in great fear, for God is with the generation of the righteous Psalm 14:5.

One strategy for combating mockers attacking the Bible: Don’t be defensive, go on the offensive. Take the upper hand when they begin questioning you about it. Remember, they’re not looking for answers, only arguments. Their intention is to make you look silly and themselves look sensible. For example, if they ask you about Old Testament laws seemingly cruel, ask them, “What does New Testament grace say about it? What did Jesus say about it?” They won’t be able to tell you. Ask them, “Why not? Unless you know,  you don’t have the full picture so you’re bitterness and arrogance towards the Bible and God is unjustified. Why are you so bitter and arrogant?” Every question thrown at you, throw it back with a question of your own.

One question for combating mockers attacking the Bible: “If the answer I give you is to your satisfaction, would you be prepared to have a complete change of heart about who you are and the way you currently live?” That question will show you the type of person you’re dealing with. It’ll also show you it’s time to dismiss yourself from them. If a wise man contends with a foolish man, whether the fool rages or laughs, there is no peace Proverbs 29:9. Wise man and Bible Commentator Albert Barnes put it like this: “All modes of teaching – the stern rebuke or the smiling speech – are alike useless with the “foolish” man; there is “no rest.” The ceaseless cavilling goes on still.” True! Don’t allow Satan’s crowd to steal your peace from you.

Is there any hope for mockers attacking the Bible? No hope as mockers, no. There’s hope only if they stop to reflect on how God sees them – blasphemers as well as shallow, fools and liars, then bow before Jesus Christ and cry out for mercy. They’d rather go to hell than do that, even though they reject the reality of such a place! This is the devil’s world; these are his people and he’s got them on the march like no other time in history. Why? It’s his last hurrah, he knows it and he seeks to take down as many as possible before it’s all over. If in reading this God has mercifully shown you you’re a mocker, do this now: Forsake foolishness and live, and go in the way of understanding Proverbs 9:6. Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven Matthew 18:3.
