Sometimes when I door-knocked a person’s home it was as though he or she was expecting me to call and as a result I was often immediately invited inside. Gordon did this one morning and no sooner had he done so, when his partner Jill asked, “How much do you people charge for somebody to get baptised?” Guilt was written all over her face when she said it and when I looked into her eyes to respond she turned her head away. The moment I mentioned that I was from a local church, Mrs Stark expressed immediate anger. Standing in her doorway she told me in no uncertain terms that she was not interested in God or, “any of you people who say you believe in Him!” Not only was this the voice of an angry woman but more importantly, I heard the voice of a hurting woman.
