Of the many hundreds of people that I met doing this work out on the streets, there were only a few that I had the on-going pleasure to visit on a regular basis.  Regardless of whether they accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ or not, I was made welcome in their homes for tea or coffee and a chat.  These people had a clear understanding Read the rest of this entry »

I experienced a wide variety of negative responses when proclaiming the Christian gospel message with people at their doorstep or in their homes.  I was often amazed however, at just how rude and bad mannered many of the elderly, retired, ”well-to do” people could become.  In every other way perhaps, they would probably show up in society as good, moral, loving, law-abiding citizens, enjoying Read the rest of this entry »

A middle-aged church-going man asked me, “Why is your church marketing itself like a business?”  I replied by informing him that rather than “marketing” ourselves, we were in fact, fulfilling the biblical command of Christ, who told us “go” not “come.”  In other words, our commitment was to go and tell people about Jesus Christ and what He has done for each one of us, not compel them to come to church to be told that.  At the Read the rest of this entry »

I suppose the number of church-affiliated people who told me that they believed in God, in comparison to the non-church-affiliated who said they did not, could have been as high as ninety-five percent.  That figure is purely a guess on my part.  In any case, I was quick to learn that it did not really matter.  Of those ninety-five percent of people, perhaps eighty percent could Read the rest of this entry »

The first time I spoke with Helen it was not face to face.  We communicated through her locked security front door.  Helen told me she’d had a stroke some thirteen years earlier, leaving one side of her body paralysed and she was now confined to a wheelchair.  But on that particular day she was in bed and not able to come to the door.  So I gave her the reason for my visit and then asked her if she believed in Jesus Christ.  She said she had very strong doubts, but was in any case, “not really interested in religion.”  I told her that we had something in common, because, “neither am I.” Read the rest of this entry »

The day Mrs Landers came to the door she immediately began to cry when I mentioned that I was from a local church, calling to give her a, “good message from the Lord Jesus Christ.”  It was the first week of winter and she said to me, “Always at this time of the year I get sad and it lasts all winter.  Would you come in please?” Read the rest of this entry »

I walked around the back of the house and I saw the man sitting on some out-house doorsteps stirring a tin of paint with an electric drill.  As he looked up at me I said to him, “You need Jesus Christ.”  He quickly responded by saying, “I’ve been looking for Him.” Read the rest of this entry »

I met Mrs Stone at the local shopping center street festival.  It was during a time of economic downturn - unemployment was high, school leavers couldn’t find jobs, businesses in the street and elsewhere were closing down and in general there was an air of hopelessness across the community. The first time I met Mr de Silva he had very little time to chat, but he was very interested in my message so he asked me to come back at a later date.  Three weeks later I called back and he invited me inside.  He told me that here in Australia he was now a tennis coach, but in his native Sri Lanka he worked as a high-ranking Government official.  At one time in that position, he said he got caught up in “some political wranglings,” and got shot two or three times in the stomach.
