Chewed up and spat out.

Whether they were church-goers or not, every so often on the streets I was asked, “What does ‘born again’ mean?”  Thanks to the Internet today there are some wonderful, in-depth, theological answers to the question, but for the purposes of this post, it literally means to be “born from above by the Spirit of God.”  In other words, a spiritual transformation takes Read the rest of this entry »

What is the explanation?

Posted by Roger Williams

I experienced a wide variety of negative responses when proclaiming the Christian gospel message with people at their doorstep or in their homes.  I was often amazed however, at just how rude and bad mannered many of the elderly, retired, ”well-to do” people could become.  In every other way perhaps, they would probably show up in society as good, moral, loving, law-abiding citizens, enjoying Read the rest of this entry »

What’s the matter with your eyes?

The first time I spoke with Helen it was not face to face.  We communicated through her locked security front door.  Helen told me she’d had a stroke some thirteen years earlier, leaving one side of her body paralysed and she was now confined to a wheelchair.  But on that particular day she was in bed and not able to come to the door.  So I gave her the reason for my visit and then asked her if she believed in Jesus Christ.  She said she had very strong doubts, but was in any case, “not really interested in religion.”  I told her that we had something in common, because, “neither am I.” Read the rest of this entry »

She always felt she was to blame.

The old lady told me her name was Mrs Ashby.  She stood in her doorway one mid-morning wearing a dirty old nightgown, looking as though she was carrying all the troubles of the world upon her shoulders.  I asked her what the matter was and she said it had to do with lumps in her breast which the medical specialist, “was looking at” and that soon she might have to go into hospital for an operation. God at work again.

A young man in his mid-twenties came to the door and when he was informed of the purpose of my visit he told me he was a communist from Yugoslavia.  Then he said, “I could be Jesus.”  I told him that was not possible, so he asked me, “Why not?”  I explained that Jesus was not a communist nor was He from Yugoslavia.  I then went on to say that if he really was Jesus, then he’d be doing the work Jesus said He would be doing when He returns. Can you come next week?

I met Mrs Stone at the local shopping center street festival.  It was during a time of economic downturn - unemployment was high, school leavers couldn’t find jobs, businesses in the street and elsewhere were closing down and in general there was an air of hopelessness across the community. Who do you say I am?

Posted by Roger Williams

During His ministry on earth, Jesus Christ asked His disciples as to who the people thought He was.  Now, it wasn’t that He didn’t know what the people were thinking or saying about Him, but He used this to challenge the disciples with His next question, “Who do you say I am?”  To all who have heard the gospel of Christ, the same question applies today.
